How Can the Money Be Used?

WEC Awards Six Scholarships in February 2011

 

On February 19th, 2011, WEC awarded $5,000 in scholarships to five women pursuing higher educations related to sciences and environment. The winners included:

Kady Lyons is working towards a MS in Marine Biology at California State University Long Beach.

Melissa Benitez is working towards a BS in Earth and Environmental Sciences and Public Health Services at University of California Irvine.

Julia Clark is working towards a transfer degree at Glendale Community College. She looks to earn her Bachelors in Environmental Science.

Sarah Wandersee is a working towards a PhD in Geography at San Diego State University.

Asha Srinivasa is working towards a PhD in Environmental Engineering at University of California Los Angeles.

Scholarships

The Women's Environmental Council (WEC) supports women who are preparing to pursue careers in the environmental field. As part of our support efforts, we award scholarships to women attending institutes of higher learning in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. In addition, recipients also receive a complimentary one-year WEC membership in the chapter county where they attend school. Scholarships are awarded at the WEC Annual Meeting in the first quarter of each year.

Who Can Apply?

Please click on the link above for an application and details about the requirements. Briefly, WEC accepts applications from female undergraduate (4-year university or 2-year community college) and graduate students who are actively engaged in the pursuit of a career in the environmental field. Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. Degrees or studies may include, but are not limited to, the following fields:

Architecture Forestry

Ecology Marine studies

Biology Geography

Environmental Science Urban planning

Chemistry Geology/hydrology

Environmental Engineering
