City of San Diego Canyon Watchers Program
The City of San Diego Canyon Watchers programs utilizes local residents to find sewer
spills in the canyons of San Diego. When a sewer spill occurs in a street or on private
property, that spill is usually reported to the Metropolitan Wastewater Department
within minutes. In a canyon, such a spill may go undetected for days. If while on
your canyon walk you see: sewage or a foamy discharge spilling from a manhole; sewage
flowing down a canyon; a damaged or vandalized manhole; an exposed sewer pipe; or
an unsecured manhole -
Litter and Storm Drains
Think Blue is the City of San Diego's storm water pollution prevention education
program. This month the program focuses on litter in storm drains and what you can
do to reduce waste and to prevent trash from entering the storm drain. Here are some
things you can do to Think Blue:
* Always set an example by not littering
* Keep your
yard clean and free of things that can blow into the storm drain
* Make sure garbage
can lids are on tight when trash is thrown out
* Use a litterbag in your car
* When
you visit the beach or a park, throw litter away in the garbage cans provided.

Torrey Pines State Reserve invites you to participate in the continuing effort to
restore and protect the Los Penasquitos Marsh Natural Preserve and wildlife corridors.
Volunteers will assist park staff in the removal of exotic plants (non-

The San Diego Audubon Society is working on a wide range of issues related to land use and growth. Volunteers are always needed. The Conservation Committee meets the last Monday of the month from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. at the Society's office at 4891 Pacific Highway, Suite 112. All are welcome. Trail Restoration at Mission Trails -
Mission Trails Regional Park encompasses nearly 5800 acres of both natural and developed
recreational areas. Mission Trails is always in need of volunteers to help with trail

Famosa Slough Treatment Ponds -
Famosa Slough Treatment Ponds need volunteers to assist with weeding, watering and
planting. Days and times are open. Please contact Friends of Famosa Slough at 619-
San Dieguito River Park
Volunteers are needed for patrols, Boy Scout projects, trail maintenance and habitat rehabilitation at the San Diequito River Park. Trail maintenance is done every second Sunday, and habitat rehabilitation volunteers meet the third Saturday of each month at Lake Hodges, Escondido and San Pasqual Valley areas.

The Fallbrook Land Conservancy trails committee needs volunteers to repair and maintain trails.
Jack's Pond Park and Wildlife Discovery Center, San Marcos
The park and center need volunteers to assist visitors, answer questions, maintain exhibits, lead hikes, patrol on foot or horseback and other duties. No experience necessary. Volunteers will receive instruction on the basics of plant, animal, and track identification, wildlife safety and emergency procedures.
