WEC History

Our History

The WEC was founded in 1993 by a group of women environmental professionals from Southern California. Several of these women were working as in-house environmental consultants and were isolated from other environmental professionals. Other women founders were working primarily with men and sought the supportive network of a women's organization.

All of the women recognized the need for an environmental network that could be used for sharing information and ideas, as well as for contributing environmental services to the local community. Our WEC founders developed an organization that promoted environmental education, career growth, and community spirit.

Since 1993, the WEC has established chapters in Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. We are continuing to grow outside the Southern California area.

WEC has also established an alliance with the Society of Women Environmental Professionals (SWEP), a similar support/networking/community service non-profit organization in the Midwest and Eastern United States.

We Believe

  • It is possible to work in consensus, while promoting personal empowerment and achieving a sustainable world.
  • We can balance personal, business, community, and environmental needs in a mutually beneficial manner.
  • Individuals make a difference and have the power to precipitate change.
  • There is a need to move beyond the adversarial roles which limit the flow of ideas, creativity, and the discovery of vital solutions.
