WEC Awards Six Scholarships in 2007

WEC continued our scholarship program for the fifth year and awarded $1,000 each to six young women pursuing careers in the environmental field. This has been a goal of the WEC for many years and being able to fulfill that dream has been gratifying.

We received 25 applications in 2007. All the applicants were so fired up about describing how their education and volunteerism are shaping their future career goals – it made it really difficult to choose only six winners. And though we have tailored our application to minimize the importance of grades, the current GPAs of the winners still ranged from 3.78 to 4.0. Clearly, we could have selected at least another 12 applicants who were worthy of our scholarship. This year's winners included:

  • Celina Anderson Stuart, UC Irvine, pursuing a Master's in Urban & Regional Planning (she is also a WEC OC Chapter Board Member)
  • Rachel Andrus, Cal State Los Angeles, pursuing a Master of Science in Environmental Hydrogeology
  • Stacy Krueger, Cal State Northridge, pursuing a Master of Science in Marine Biology
  • Stephanie Kyriazis, Cal State Northridge, pursuing a Master of Science in Geology
  • Madhura Niphadkar, San Diego State University, pursuing a doctorate in Geography with an emphasis on Remote Sensing using GIS
  • Michelle Vitale, Fullerton College, completing science courses not taken as an undergrad to pursue entering a Master's program for education

Thank you all for your contributions toward the scholarship program. This is a fabulous program that is right in line with the Mission of the WEC. Fundraising efforts will continue as we plan to offer scholarships again in 2008. Applications are available by clicking on the above link, and are due by December 3, 2007. Spread the word and support your chapters as they begin to raise funds for the scholarship program.
