The Women's Environmental Council (WEC) supports women who are preparing to pursue careers in the environmental field. As part of our support efforts, we award scholarships to women attending institutes of higher learning in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. In addition, recipients also receive a complimentary one-year WEC membership in the chapter county where they attend school.  Scholarships are awarded at the WEC Annual Meeting in the first quarter of each year.

Who Can Apply?

Please click on the link above for an application and details about the requirements. Briefly, WEC accepts applications from female undergraduate (4-year university or 2-year community college) and graduate students who are actively engaged in the pursuit of a career in the environmental field.  Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. Degrees or studies may include, but are not limited to, the following fields:

Architecture

Forestry

Biology

Geography

Chemistry

Geology/hydrology

Ecology

Marine studies

Environmental Science

Urban planning

Environmental Engineering

 

How Can the Money Be Used?

The scholarship award may be used for any aspect of education. This can include tuition, books, research, housing, etc.

Application Deadline:  Completed applications must be postmarked by December 18, 2009, and mailed to: WEC Scholarships, PO Box 36, Solana Beach, CA, 92075.

WEC Awards Six Scholarships in March 2010

On March 27, WEC awarded $7,500 in scholarships to six women pursuing higher educations related to sciences and environment. The winners included:

Kimberly Bush, pursuing a MS in City Planning at San Diego State.

Lisa Fong, working towards a doctorate degree in Environmental Engineering and Science through the Department of Environmental Health Science at UCLA.

Linda Ocampo, her pre-requisite coursework for engineering at East LA College.

Leah Segui is a senior at San Diego State working towards a BS in Biology.

Jessica Young is pursuing a BS in Biology with an emphasis in Ecology and environmental science and policy at CSU Long Beach.

Amira Yousef, pursuing a MS in Urban and Regional Planning at UC Irvine.

Congratulations and we wish you continued success in your academic pursuits.
